Preventing Yeast Infections

Preventing yeast infections can be surprisingly straightforward and discrete, which is good news if you feel uncomfortable approaching the topic.  Yeast infections can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable problem, however you may feel a little more reassured to know that about 75% of women will experience this problem at some time during their life.  With just a few everyday changes, you could be on track to prevent this problem before it occurs.

What Causes A Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection occurs when some form of imbalance produces the ideal breeding ground for the Candida albicans fungus. This fungus can be found in very low levels without causing a yeast infection (also known as thrush). When an imbalance occurs that creates a more alkaline environment or contributes other optimal environmental conditions that accelerate growth in numbers, then a yeast infection can occur.

Preventing yeast infections is all about stopping that change of environment and subsequent increase in concentration of the Candida by ensuring the body has the necessary 'tools' so that infection doesn't occur.

Ways Of Preventing Yeast Infections

There are a number of different ways in which you can help the body and prevent any imbalances in natural environment that allow the fungi to take hold.

1. Diet - With a well balanced diet, your body has the nutrition necessary to stay strong and healthy throughout your life. There are other important things that can occur when you change the diet or eat concentrations of certain foods. One big contributor to yeast infection is eating foods that are high in yeast content. By reducing the concentration of these foods in your diet and maintaining a well balanced diet overall, you can reduce the potential for an increase in Candida organisms and preventing yeast infections from having a chance to develop.

2. Probiotics - This is a form of dietary supplement that contains high concentrations of the natural bacteria that are present in the gut. By taking this regularly and also eating foods such as yoghurt which have high levels of these naturally occurring bacteria, you can maintain a balance in your body's natural systems. This in turn can help to boost your body's defences, which makes you better able to fight off infections such as a yeast infection.

3. Wearing breathable fabrics - One simple way of preventing yeast infections is by wearing fabrics such as cotton that are breathable. This prevents the likelihood of creating a warm, damp environment in which the fungi can thrive. Wearing breathable fabrics is a simple step to take, but it can have a significant impact when it comes to preventing the growth of the Candida fungus that causes a yeast infection.

4. Alternative medicines - If you suspect that you might be on the point of developing an infection, then using some alternative treatments can prevent the problem from developing any further. One such form of treatment is to use tea tree oil. This natural fungicide can help to reduce the numbers of the organism in the body, thereby allowing a natural balance to be restored. It is also possible to use treatments such as vaginal suppositories, which create a more acidic environment in which the fungi do not have a chance to grow at a rapid rate that could cause a yeast infection.

By following some of these simple strategies, you can ensure that the Candida virus doesn't have a suitable environment in which to increase in numbers that can create imbalance.  Preventing yeast infections naturally is a good alternative to using stronger medications and treatments once the problem has really taken hold.  If you are unsure whether these natural hints are suitable for you, then seek advice from an alternative health therapist such as a naturopath or see your medical doctor.
