Oral Yeast Infections

Oral yeast infections are just what the name suggests, a yeast infection of the mouth. The infection can be passed between infected individuals, or it can occur when a natural imbalance in the mouth or body causes the infection to develop. The problem can be uncomfortable and may be embarrassing if you suffer from the condition. Treatment of the condition however, is generally straightforward and can be done quite quickly and simply if the infection has only developed to a superficial level.

Yeast infections are the result of an increase in the number of Candida albicans organisms in one area of the body. This fungus is often present in adults, with many women experiencing at least one yeast infection during their lifetime. The organism that is responsible lives in the intestinal tract, which stretches from the mouth to the anus, as well as in between the toes, in the genitals and on other parts of the body. Oral yeast infections are connected to the presence of the organism in the intestinal tract and can also be passed along by contact with someone who has the infection.

Oral yeast infections can be spread by the transfer of the organism from other parts of the body or it can develop due to an imbalance in the body.  An imbalance such as an alkaline environment in which the organism can grow readily is one reason why the organism may increase in numbers to become an infection.  The Candida fungus is opportunistic, which means that it will take advantage of an opportunity where it can increase its numbers rapidly. If the right environment exists, the fungus will utilise this opportunity.  It can also take advantage of an imbalance that might occur if you are taking antibiotics. When there is a decrease in the healthy bacteria that exist in the gut as a result of the antibiotic, the fungus will take up that 'space' and grow to cause an infection.

Symptoms and signs of oral yeast infections can include:

  • Burning sensations in the mouth
  • Stinging when eating
  • Patches of white or yellow in the mouth
  • Cravings for sugar or carbohydrates
  • Some problems with digestion

Treatment of an oral Candida infection can be done in a number of ways.  The use of anti-fungal medications and creams is one of the most common ways.  Liquid anti-fungals for the mouth,  a change in diet and the inclusion of probiotics which contain healthy gut bacteria can also help; particularly with oral yeast infections. If you have an infection that persists despite treatment, then it is worthwhile seeking medical advice.

Early treatment of oral yeast infections will help to clear up this uncomfortable problem quickly and give you relief from the symptoms.  There are a range of different causes, so if you have spouse or partner, it is worth checking whether they need to get treatment also.  If you think that a course of antibiotics may have been one of the underlying causes, then a healthy diet and probiotics could improve the situation.

Additionally an holistic or natural approach is worth your consideration if you are plagued by recurring oral yeast infections.  And, as always, if you're concerned about the condition, then take the time to speak with a medical doctor, pharmacist or an alternative medical practitioner to get the treatment you need.
