Male Yeast Infection

Although Candida infections are less common in males than in females, they can happen for a variety of reasons and the symptoms of a male yeast infection are very similar to those experienced by females.  This is because the same organism, Candida albicans is responsible for these conditions in both genders.

A male yeast infection of the penis tends to be more common among uncircumcised men because the foreskin provides a warm, dark, moist area for Candida to multiply. In addition, although it is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease, a male yeast infection may occur after sexual intercourse with an infected partner.

Other causes of a male yeast infection may include:

  • Tight or wet clothing (especially underwear or jeans)
  • Prolonged use of antibiotics which destroy normal good bacteria allowing Candida to thrive
  • Over-consumption of beer, as Candida thrives in fermented beverages
  • Poor nutrition
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Other conditions which weaken the immune system – cancer, HIV/AIDS

Many men are not as diligent as women when it comes to health matters, and may put up with a male yeast infection for much longer than is necessary or safe.  However, because many male yeast infection symptoms are non-specific (ie. occur in other conditions) it is essential to get a professional diagnosis up front so that you know what you are dealing with.

Some of the more common male yeast infection symptoms include:

  • Itching, burning or rashes at the head or along the shaft of the penis
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Penal swelling or discharge

If you suspect you have a male yeast infection, get it confirmed by a medic before starting any course of treatment.  This will rule out a more serious condition which may exhibit the same symptoms.

Male yeast infection treatments are similar to those prescribed to women.   The standard over the counter or prescription creams and lotions are a good place to start, however if you find yourself suffering from recurring infections then you may like to try a natural or holistic treatment.

Natural and holistic treatments are safe, don’t cause any side effects and are particularly effective if your Candida has become resistant to traditional medications or if you find yourself getting repeat infections.  That’s because this type of treatment tends to focus on the root cause of your male yeast infection rather than just treating the symptoms.  So, if you find yourself in this situation and want a more permanent cure for your problem, it is well worth giving one of these non-traditional treatments a try.
